August 6th, 2008 Green Committee Newsletter
Just a quick reminder - There will be a MEETING TONIGHT at the Chamber of Commerce (7:00). Sorry for the late notice. Come by if you are free.

Our agenda was to put together a plan for a new Green Committee newsletter. How is this one that you are reading? Come and let us know what you think.

Green Committee at the Concerts on the Green
The Green Committee has had a small table setup at the last 3 weeks of Thursday night concerts. (one was rained out.)

We've sold raffle tickets to raise funds and given away a gift certificate to Geislers (with a reusable grocery bag) and a gift certificate to Borders Books.

Feel free to come man the table and talk to folks in town. They seem very excited to join the mailing list, learn how to save money (and the earth), and contribute their own good news and ideas.

For example, Bright Eyes Day Care has committed to using reusable cloth diapers. Another suggests putting a small sign in your yard if you run on renewable energy. Third, a bicyclist suggested Windsor try to ban free plastic bags from our stores.

Summer Months at the Green Committee
We've all been busy this summer. Don't feel bad if you haven't been able to make meeting. It sounds like we're all in the same boat. I'm sorry that I haven't been sending out the newsletter as regularly as we need.

So, enjoy your summer, gather up those good ideas, and get ready for some great things this fall.

Local Produce
Have you been to a Farm Stand lately? It's amazing how good the food is right now AND how inexpensive it can be.

This past weekend, I filled an arm straining 4 bags of corn, tomatoes, peaches, blueberries and cucumbers. It cost less than $20 . Even more amazing is how quickly I ate it. The supermarket vegetables seem stale in comparison.

So, do yourself a favor and find some local produce. I can tell you that the peaches and tomatoes are wonderful this week.

New Mascot - He Needs a Name and a Shirt
The Green Committee has a new mascot. He stands 2 feet tall, wears a size 2p t-shirt, and is all green.

Karen Resch created this character years ago and was about to retire him. Rather than ending up in the landfill, he got a second chance on life as a "recycled" spokesman.

1) He probably needs a name.
2) He should have a t-shirt.

Let me know if you have any ideas for either one.

July Meeting Notes
We had a quiet meeting on a Wedneday night in July. Several people emailed about being on vacation, but we had another new face.

Here are some notes:

- Katie researched grants with ING, Target, etc. One of the goals is to look for funding to put a solar panel on the Chamber building.

- John will try to setup a booth at the Thursday concert.

- Jonathan brought mint to share and will work on a recycling program for Win-TV.

Survey - Are Wood Stoves Bad for the Environment?
Are they any better than heating with oil or gas? Should we be investing in better insulation? Email with your ideas.
