Green Committee Minutes  5/7/2008

Our meeting started at 6:30 pm in the Chambers office 1st floor. We had three new Windsor residents in attendance to express their Green interests.

Jonathon Mejias demonstrated his recycling slide show for the Shad Derby exhibit.   He gave an update on the success of the Sage Park Recycling Program.  He extended a big thank you for the support Jon Waivers , Cyd Groff, and others provided to support the recycling kick off and competition.
Jon Waivers donated a beautiful piece of art that he made entirely from trash.  This artwork was given as a trophy to the winning Sage Park Team. The students loved the piece and thought it was made of blown glass. Thank you Jon W.

John Zito of the Alchemy Caf donated a stone carving to the teacher that helped Jon M. start the recycling program at Sage Park. Thank you to John and Imani Zito at The Alchemy Caf in Hartford.
The Eco Warriors series has begun on WIN TV. The series provides information and motivation for recycling and other Green activities. Anyone interested in supporting this TV program can e-mail greenecowarriors.org@gmail.com  Jon is willing to have other youth involved in upcoming show creations.

Action Note: John W.  suggested Jon M follow up with the school board and relay the successes. He asked Jon to contact Adam Gutcheon .

Group discussion regarding Styrofoam trays used in schools: The group expressed concerns about the use of throw away Styrofoam trays in Windsor schools. The waste it creates was shocking. Peter Faulk provided a visual, in one year Windsor schools use enough trays that if stacked are bigger than all four of the world's tallest buildings, combined! That is amazing and scary.

Clean energy Sign ups at the Shad Derby: The green committee is providing the opportunity for Windsor residents to sign up for clean electricity at the Shad Derby. Sign up Forms and computer access to online registration will be available at the booth sponsored by the Green Committee and the Chamber. The booth will feature information of the cost offsets of using efficiency bulbs, and good energy reducing techniques.

Solar Panels : The Town Gave permission for the one kilowatt panel to be placed at the Chamber, we only 63 more homes to sign up for the second kilowatt panel!

Solar Power classes:  The committee discussed the idea of holding solar power classes sometime in the future.

Lou Cance of Windsor Sanitation: attended the Green committee meeting. He provided an amazing history of the handling of trash in Windsor. He recounted the days when things like clothing and rags were recycled. He explained the process of Recycling collection and sales at the market as it stands today. Lucien explained that not only is recycling good for the environment, but it is also good for business. Items like aluminum, cardboard, and newspapers bring in good, money at the market. He told the committee that when Windsor Sanitation was tracking recycling statistics they counted a 78% percent recycling rate. Windsor Sanitation fully supports the town's recycling efforts.  Lucien was very excited about the Green Committee's projects.  He offered to donate the recycling bins for the green to be used at the Shad Derby!

Orange recycling Bins will be placed next to trash cans at the Derby to encourage people to recycle.  Windsor Sanitation will pick up the bins after they are emptied into the larger recycling container behind Town hall.

Action Note: Get List of recyclables for the Town of Windsor posted on WIN TV.  Run announcements about recycling and the importance of recycling on WIN TV. Recycling facts ect.
