| New Ridesharing Initiative

For most commuters, the volatile price of gasoline has lent new urgency to sharing the ride to work. Just in the nick of time, The Rideshare Company and the NuRide Network are announcing a 2 million mile challenge to companies and commuters across Connecticut. The goal of the challenge is to attract thousands of commuters to share their ride to work and remove 2, 000,000 miles off Connecticut roads between April and October 2006.
One local employer, the Aetna, recently launched the program to its employees and is impressed with the participation. Almost 500 employees have registered to use the NuRide Network sharing over 9,000 trips to work. That means they have driven 191,707 fewer miles in single occupant vehicles, saving 84.5 tons of emissions.
Employees especially like the NuRide Network because it gives them choice merchandise rewards while employers like the program because it reduces parking needs and costs them nothing. For example, Aetna employees have thus far enjoyed $55,900 in merchandise rewards and the company reports that on average NuRiders are freeing up 32 parking spaces daily.
