Lucinda's Beads By Shari King
Lucinda's Beads is moving to a new Location! She will be opening her new store at the Corner house at 55 Poqounock Avenue on Wed March 8. A grand opening celebration with refreshments and door prizes is planned for Sat April 1.
Bead storeowner Lucinda Moses is originally from Unionville; she graduated from Farmington High school and made her living for fifteen years with Aetna as a data processor. Her work with Aetna brought her to Windsor.
" I was living in Middletown when I bought my house in Windsor but years before I would drive around downtown Windsor because I worked nearby. I actually admired East Street one day, the way it winds around and goes over the brook. It's funny that I ended up buying a house and a business in the same neighborhood. I saw this little house on Pleasant Street and I knew the moment I walked in, it would be mine." Moses said.
In 1997, her significant other, Joe Richards went to Larsen's hardware in the old Gristmill and noticed that the little barbershop that had been next to it was now vacant.
Moses said, "Joe came home and said, stop what you're doing, drop everything, hurry up, you have to check this out. He was always telling me I needed my own little shop. I had the desire but no idea what I'd do with one, but my corporate work was so unsatisfying, there was no outlet for creativity."
Unbelievably, she started a business with her savings without a business plan."I always loved this little shop in Jamaica Vermont. This woman sold coffee and gifts. She had cards, pastries and beads. That little store was my inspiration. I started as a gift store and it evolved into a bead store. Within my first year, it was apparent people were most interested in the beads. I have customers that tell me its either beading or time spent at a psychiatrist. When you are concentrating on creating something, you are not thinking about your problems." Moses said. Lucinda's Beads offers a wide variety of classes as well as a large selection of beads, findings, tools and accessories. Classes range from basic beading to the more complex jewelry making skill as in a wire wrapping technique.
Moses is optimistic about the future and said, "My new store will be brighter with more work space and I will continue to expand my inventory, to have new things to keep my customers interested. I am going to be introducing a new class, Lamp work beads. Students will be able to create their own glass beads over a flame. I hope more people discover beading. It is a lot of fun and you can create a personal gift or something for yourself in an afternoon. I am excited about my new venture; I've done very well here. Windsor has been very supportive of my business."
