Mark Griggs AIA Architects, Interiors, Planners By Shari King
Windsor native Mark Griggs is uniquely different architect because he uses an unusual method of inquiry into a design. He looks at things differently than most and manages somehow to capture the poetics of a project.
Griggs enjoys looking at things metaphorically and likens the process of developing his work to marathon running. Griggs said. "It's like running a marathon race. The ideas don't come right away; you just have to start running. The twenty mile mark, that's when the real innovative ideas start to flow."
One example of this concept is the trellis on the bathhouse at Goslee pool. The town approached Griggs to come up with a low budget design. He was first inspired by the image of flapping canvas, like the sail of a sailboat or beach umbrella. Griggs was looking at canvas beach chairs endlessly for days, turning the chairs end over end examining all the angles. He wanted to recreate that above the decking. He ultimately designed multi colored box kites that sit above the bathhouse. The design is decidedly beachy with a wave pattern that is a perfect compliment to the pool. "I used an artistic way of breathing new life into an old building." Griggs said
Griggs has been doing home makeovers for over twenty years. Griggs said, "Home-make-overs today are big business. I would like to see people shift their focus more to the architectural land-scaping. People today have more and more toys; they need places to tuck them away. Our quaint neighborhoods are losing their charm because of all the cars all over the place. All the cars parked in front of the houses and on the street clutter the landscape. We need to look at the bigger picture."
Griggs is proud of his hometown and believes Windsor is a goldmine of possibilities. "Windsor's Design Review Committee is doing a great job. Through all their years of hard work, they have added some nice details to some projects in town." Griggs said.
