Whistle Stop Cafe

By Kyle Beecher

When customers walk into the new Whistle Stop Cafe, they expect good friendly service, and fresh homemade food, and that's exactly what they're treated to!

Since its grand opening in November 2004, the Whistle Stop Cafe has been an instantaneous success with Windsor and non-Windsor residents.

The Plant family, who lives in Windsor, had always talked about starting their own restaurant in town. The family includes Alan and Dana, their twin daughters, Christina and Elizabeth, who just graduated from Windsor High School, and their oldest daughter, Lauren, who recently graduated from college.

Last year, Alan suffered a stroke and was forced to retire from his job. Leaving only Dana to earn money, they thought that a good way to get their twin daughters through college and other expenses would be to open their own restaurant.

"We knew it would be a lot of work, planning and time management, but as a family we came together and accomplished our goal," said Elizabeth.

The Whistle Stop has a steady flow of customers, many who are regulars and who enjoy the restaurant's good food and friendly, hospitable service.

Regular customer and recent WHS graduate Yunie Mojica said, "Every time I eat at Whistle Stop, I receive the same friendly service, good atmosphere and delicious food."

All the Plant sisters can be seen hard at work on any given day in their restaurant.

"We love working there," Christina said. "It's a great experience working with the people we love and care about. We work together as a team to make this restaurant run. We've never been closer."

The Plant family has high hopes for their new bistro and Dana hopes for the Whistle Stop to serve as them financially for the twins' college expenses. Dana also hopes to turn management of restaurant over to Elizabeth when she graduates from the Culinary School at Johnson and Wales in 2009.

Clearly, the key to success for the cafe is its friendly appeal and local flavor. The smell of coffee and breakfast foods, the sound of trains, and the rustic setting next to the historic Windsor Train Station combine to make this the perfect setting to meet family and friends for a good meal!

Breakfast is served all day on weekends and lunch is served every day starting at 11 a.m. Dinner is also served Wednesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Named after the movie Fried Green Tomatoes, and because they are situated near a train station, it's no wonder they call their restaurant Whistle Stop Cafe!
