Tips for Success

Use this checklist as a guide in preparing for a successful sidewalk sale.

Displays

Get customer to your door while they're out shopping the sidewalk sale. Displays can be like honey to bees, if created properly. Set time aside to think about the type of outside display you would like to do. If it's attractive and interesting, it will bring more customers to your door. If it's thrown together with a bunch of items consumers are not interested in, it probably will not bring customers to your door.

Get the word out

Advertising, whether it's print ads, flyers, radio, TV, or direct mail, promoting what your business has on sale during the sidewalk sale ensures that the public is informed.

Incentives

Give consumers an extra advantage to shop your store by providing free services just for stopping by. If you're a candy store, you might want to have a clown or face painter on site during the sidewalk sale to encourage parents to visit with their children. Other great ideas include interesting displays: fire truck, racecar, etc.; free advise from specialists or experts in your particular field; fun, easy and quick activities relevant to your target market; enter-to-win drawings or in-store give-aways; or free balloon for each person. Use these ideas as a guideline to come up with "advantage incentives" that will bring customers to your door.

Pricing

Great deals bring the customers. Everybody wants to know they've gotten a great deal and the sidewalk sale is your chance to promote your most compelling offers. To make your offer compelling, offer something more than what consumers see everyday like the 10% - 20% off. Compelling offers include discounts of 25%, 50% or more off; buy 1 get 1 free, or receive a free complimentary item with a minimum purchase. Use these ideas as a guideline to come up with offers that work for your business.

Product

Are you offering the product or merchandise that consumers want to purchase? If it's been in your back room forever and you can sell it to your regular customers, you probably will not be able to sell it to any other customer. Make sure the products you will sell during the sidewalk sale are products in demand by consumers.

Vendors

Enlist their support for give-away items, demonstrations, or expert advice. Utilizing vendors that you purchase products from will add to whatever you do for the sidewalk sale, and it usually costs you nothing to do so. Whether it's obtaining free samples from vendors to give away or securing a product representative to be on site for consumer questions, vendors can and want to make your sales event a success. Contact your vendors and find out how they can support your sales efforts.
