Windsor Historical Society Joins Governor's "Staycation" Initiative

During the months of July and August, Windsor Historical Society joins Governor Jodi Rell's "Staycation" initiative focused on getting Connecticut residents to save gas and explore cultural offerings close to home. As a special incentive, all visitors mentioning the "Staycation" initiative will get a dollar off the price of admission which is normally $5 for adults and $4 for seniors and students. Children under 12 accompanied by an adult visit free.

What's here? You can tour a charming 18th century New England home and evocative exhibition galleries including the Society's newest exhibition Windsor Then and Now: A Photo History 1890-2008. You can pore through the many fascinating old photographs, documents, and genealogical materials in our research library. Families of all ages visiting our Hands-On-History Learning Center can try on colonial costumes, "cook" a meal in the fireplace, "milk" the cow, and attend a one-room school. So if you are looking for something new to do with the kids in a fun (and air-conditioned) setting, bring friends along and make it a play date.

Native American artifacts, rare 17th century chests, costumes, cigar-maker's molds, maps and more may be seen in our galleries. Sniff some of the herbs in our 18th century garden and pick a sprig or two of thyme, oregano or lavender to take home as a souvenir. Admire the quince and espaliered pear trees in our picturesque courtyard.
Step into the 1758 John and Sarah Strong house and discover what life was like for Windsor men, women, and children of the 18th and 19th centuries. Peek into a tiny corner room to see the town's first post office. Just down the hall, discover the small general store where a sea captain's wife sold imported fabrics.

After exploring our library, end your visit in our museum shop by picking up a stoneware mug, exquisite note cards, a map or history book, and a candy-stick for the road. Casual visitors and serious researchers of all ages are bound to enjoy the unforgettable collections and ambiance of the Windsor Historical Society in historic and beautiful Windsor , which celebrates its 375th anniversary this year.

The Windsor Historical Society is located at 96 Palisado Avenue (Route 159) and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Normally, general admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, and free to WHS members and children under 12 accompanied by a guardian. For more information, call (860) 688-3813 or visit us on the web at www.windsorhistoricalsociety.org .
