Bill Selig Jewelers celebrating 30 years

Bill Selig Jewelers is celebrating 30 years in Windsor by Shari King

Store Manager Sharon Selig said, "Customers can expect special discounts the entire month of Oct. We are having a mystery balloon sale. People can come in and pop a balloon and win a discount of up to thirty percent. Every balloon has a discount."

Selig Jewelers actually began in a garage in the rear of the building. Owner Bill Selig explained, " My father owned the Ford dealership in back and originally bought the building for the parking space. I came back from out west in the 70's; I had been making jewelry in an old defunct mining town in Arizona with a community of artists. When I came back to Windsor, my father let set up work space in the garage and I started making jewelry in there." He went on to say, "At that time there was no traditional jeweler in Windsor. There was a real need for traditional jewelry work, repair and sales."

A graduate of Windsor High School, Selig began his art interest in photography. He also spent time learning pottery but he said, "I liked working with clay very much but it is a tough way to make a living."

His interest in form led him to making custom jewelry and he said, "I am inspired by many different things, nature is always inspirational but lately I have been exploring architectural features of some landmark buildings in greater Hartford for inspiration. The difficult part is bringing these ideas into a miniature size and still being able to bring to mind that particular landmark." He enjoys working with unusual materials and specializes in cutting and carving opals and he said, "The world is revealed to me every time I open a stone because you never know what you are going to get inside."

Bill Selig finished by saying his focus on the future is "To continue to work on my art and blend new technology into today's jewelry design and embrace everything available to stay current and original."
