A brief history of what is Vets' Oasis is in order. Recognizing the need our homecoming veterans have in readjusting from a war combat zone to a safe civilian environment, the State governor's office, the Connecticut Veterans Association and the Chancellors of our public colleges and universities met and asked our returning veterans how we in the community could help them transition into civilian life. The response from returning veterans was that they wished for a safe community environment to gather among themselves, meet each other face to face, to discuss their experiences, their struggles and plans in finding suitable ways to reenter society. Ideas on how this could be accomplished were discussed. Veterans would need help creating this space. As a result of much discussion the GFWC/CT State Project to be known as Vets' Oasis was born.

The first thing to do was to contact colleges and see about getting a room to be donated for the Veterans to use. Once a college committed to a space, women's clubs would find ways to furnish the room. Furnish meant EVERYTHING needed for this room that the returning veterans would need. Furniture, computers, lamps, rugs, books, magazines, reference library, large screened televisions, dishes, silverware, coffee pot, etc. "A Safe Home Haven " of comfort and welcome. Many clubs within the state have been actively furnishing and holding fundraisers to help open the Vets' Oasis Room on campuses.

The Windsor Woman's Club together with the women's clubs of East Hartford and Glastonbury are working on a Vets' Oasis Room at Manchester Community College. The project is nearly finished and this benefit with the Masons will bring us much closer.

There are already Oasis Rooms up and running at Tunxis Community College and Asnuntuck Community College. There are at least 4 others opened in the state, also. Our goal is to open as many as possible wherever we can. Though, our Vets Oasis project is a 2-year State project, there is an ongoing fund where donations to open others and support the ones we have, will be coordinated.

Some information for this article was taken from the GFWCCT website (www.gfwcct.org). Should you be interested in more information on Project Oasis, this link will assist you.

Now that you have some background and understanding, please call and make a reservation. The Windsor Woman's Club wishes to thank the Masons for helping us raise funds for this great project.
