Shad Derby Grand Marshals Named
SHAD DERBY PARADE GRAND MARSHALS NAMED
Parade chairman Darrin Kelly of the Windsor Jaycees announced today that Florence Barlow and Vivian Cicero will be grand marshals of the upcoming Shad Derby parade. Kelly said that is highly unusual to have two people share the honor, "but these are two very unique women who have worked together over the last 30 years to help make Windsor a very special community, and we felt this would be a unique way to honor them."
Jointly, their volunteer activities have included the Windsor Shad Fest Bureau, the Shad Derby Committee, The Democratic Town Committee, the Huntington House Museum, the Windsor Historical Society, the Board of Northwest Park, SummerWind, and the Windsor Afro American Civic Association.
Barlow has also served as chairperson of the Youth Commission, and has been honored as a Bridge Builder. She and her husband have one son and two grandchildren. She said that while she and Cicero knew each other before they started their volunteer efforts, their friendship has grown over the years, and that their volunteer partnership has been wonderful. She is especially pleased to have been named a parade marshal because Shad Derby is so special to her.
Cicero has also served on the Conversations on Race Planning Committee and as president of the Windsor Afro American Civic Association for six years; and she and her late husband Stanley were members of the Democratic Town Committee as far back as 1978. Before she retired in 1994, she was executive secretary to the Director of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing for 37 years. Subsequently, she worked for the Windsor Board of Education for 11 years. Now, she "joyfully continues to fulfill her life-long calling and vision of serving others in her church and community." She has two sons and five grandchildren.
The Shad Derby parade will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2007. It will leave Windsor High School on Capen Street at 12:30 and proceed north on Broad Street to Windsor Center. The parade is one of the highlights of Shad Derby Festival, which will take place on Windsor Green from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
