The History of the Gallery
The Sue and Eugene Mercy, Jr. Gallery is housed in The Richmond Art Center on the campus of The Loomis Chaffee School in historic Windsor, Connecticut. Opened in September 1992, it was named for alumnus and honorary trustee Howard S. Richmond '35 and his family. The art center is the hub of the visual arts curriculum at Loomis Chaffee.

Named in honor of alumnus and former trustee Eugene Mercy '55 and his wife, Sue, the Mercy Gallery celebrates the visual arts through eight annual exhibitions presenting a wide range of diversity in medium, artistic endeavor, cultural influence and geographic representation.

Artists
During its brief history, the gallery has exhibited work by a variety of artists, including:

Lee Krasner
Mark Rothko
Siegfried Halus
Richard Diebenkorn
Willem de Kooning
Toba Tucker
Tony Fitzpatrick
Joe Coleman
Evelyn Beatrice Longman Batchelder
Northern Connecticut
Basketmakers Guild

Through its Visiting Artist Program, The Loomis Chaffee School has acquired a diverse and extraordinary collection of work. These artists, who work and live for a period of time in The Richmond Art Center, usually leave at least one piece of work for the school's collection. Notes Marilyn Rabetz, director, visiting artist program, "What is interesting about this collection is that the artwork is all produced on campus, in the presence of student eyes. In addition, the life of the school and its campus frequently slip into the artist's work, subtly changing the artist's original intent."
