Volunteers Needed for Windsor Historical Society House Tour

Friendly volunteers who enjoy meeting people are being sought to help with a special one-day event drawing hundreds to Windsor. On Saturday, May 6th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., The Windsor Historical Society will present Living Today in Yesterday's Homes, a self-guided house tour for the public. Six fascinating and livable historic homes in a variety of architectural styles spanning three centuries will be featured.

Volunteer hosts are needed at each home to make the public feel welcome, provide brief interpretation on interior architectural details and keep an eye on the homeowner's furnishings and collectibles. "Several volunteer hosts will be on duty in each home at all times," explain Dorothy McAllister and Rebekah Poppel, Volunteer Coordinators for the tour. "Training and information on each home will be provided to volunteers the week before the tour."

Volunteers are asked to make a two-hour commitment, as well as attend a training session the week before the tour. Shifts are short to allow volunteers the option of purchasing tickets and taking the tour themselves. To volunteer, contact Rebekah Poppel at 683-1525, or e-mail whs.volunteer@yahoo.com with your name, address and telephone and preferred volunteer time slot: 10 a.m. to noon, noon to 2 p.m., or 2 4 p.m.

The tour is Windsor Historical Society's major fundraiser for 2005-2006, supporting public programs for schoolchildren and adults and the operation of our historic houses, research library, exhibition galleries, and family learning center. "Volunteers will have the satisfaction of knowing that they are supporting an active, community spirited museum and preservation organization in one of Connecticut's most historic and wonderful towns," notes Christine Ermenc, Director of Windsor Historical Society. For more information about volunteering or the house tour, please call the Windsor Historical Society at (860) 688-3813.
