Windsor Schools Show Impressive Gains in the Connecticut Mastery Tests
Reversing years of declining performance, Windsor's scores on the Connecticut Mastery Tests (CMT) are up in every test math, reading and writing in grades 4, 6 and 8. On all three tests in all three grades, there was an increase in the number of students reaching Goal and a decrease in the number of students scoring in the Basic range when compared to performance on the last CMT in 2004. On some of the tests the gains were impressive, e.g., in grade 6 reading 56.6% met goal compared to 41.5 % in 2004, a 15% increase, and in writing 55.1 % met goal compared to 44.2 percent in 2004, an 11% increase. Grade 8 reading and writing saw a 10% increase in the number of students reaching goal. In grade 4 reading, the number of students scoring at the basic level decreased by 13% from 43.3% to 30.4%.
Windsor educators knew that reversing the declining test scores could not be accomplished in just one year but they were certain it could be done over time if resources were focused carefully. In 2003, the entire school system adopted a primary goal of raising the achievement of all students with a focus on literacy. Over the next three years work was aimed at ensuring continuity of curriculum within and between grades and across schools, developing and administering common and frequent assessments across K-8, analyzing and using results to make decisions in the classroom, and focusing professional development (teacher training) on literacy and sound instruction.
