| Photos From Earth Day 2009 at Northwest Park | People of all ages planted and took home beans, water melons, sunflowers, flowers, pumpkins, carrots, squash, radishes, and more.
Many hands made the work light and we had fun. Did anyone make a count of how many cups went out? I think we gave out around 40 pounds of soil a few scoops at a time.
Thanks to all of the volunteers the booth was shaded, well manned, with shovels, gloves, water, soil, seeds, seedlings, etc. And luckily, we still have lots of supplies ready to do something similar at the Shad Derby Booth.

| May 2009: Could Food Shortages Bring Down Civilization? | This is a sobering article. Forget global warming, scarcity of food and water is a bigger concern:
"The biggest threat to global stability is the potential for food crises in poor countries to cause government collapse ... Our continuing failure to deal with the environmental declines that are undermining the world food economy "most important, falling water tables, eroding soils and rising temperatures "forces me to conclude that such a collapse is possible."

The village, home to indigenous Yup'ik Eskimos, is the first of possibly scores of threatened Alaskan communities that could be abandoned."

Last month a despondent reader responded with concern that Western Civilization is about to collapse because our global energy usage is not sustainable.
While they are correct in a sense, I want to point out that it doesn't take much effort to live on 1/10th the energy usage.
What do you think? If electricity suddenly cost $2000 per month, would you use a clothes line? If gasoline shot up to $16/gallon, would you carpool?
