Windsor True Value Hardware

Owners of True Value Hardware on Broad Street in Windsor, Scott and Robin Williams epitomize the virtues of a family run business.

The Williams history in the store began when Scott Williams's father, Woody Williams bought the Windsor Hardware Store business in 1982. George Patterson had owned that hardware store for over fifty years. Scott Williams recalled, "I met George late in his life but I remember he was quite a character, always smiling and winking and sharing his words of wisdom."

In 1988 Woody Williams added a small engine repair shop in the back of the store.

"I got a great education working with my father. He took me to work with him every weekend. Sometimes I would just answer the phone, but most of the time I found other ways to entertain myself. I learned all about tools and how to fix engines working with my dad." Williams said.

Scott Williams graduated from Windsor High School and continued his education in business management at Bryant College while continuing to work with his father.

In 1995, Woody Williams passed away and Scott Williams took over the hardware store and has been steadfast in his vision of a successful family owned business. The store currently employs six of his family members and two dogs.

Daughter Ashley Williams said, "I think more people come in the store to see our dogs than to see us."

Williams said "We haven't had any problems working together, I had always enjoyed working with my dad. The secret is, we all get along. We do it as a family."

Williams's wife Robin shared, "We learned how to draw the line and leave it in the store. We don't take it home. It is the combination of all of us together that makes us strong."

In 2003 Williams closed the small engine repair and subdivided the building and the store continues to adapt to the changing needs of the community.

Williams said, "We emphasize customer service and product knowledge. We might not have everything the big chains have, but we are good at what we do. If we don't have something you are looking for, we know where to send you to get it or we can order it. The important thing though, is a locally owned business gives back to the community."

Robin Williams added, "Customer service is our strength. We do the little things the big companies won't. We can help you fix a lamp or a window. We make the time for people. It is so nice to work in a town where everybody knows you. The best part of our job is the people."
Williams and his family are all optimistic about the future of their Windsor business.

Williams said, "We will continue working hard to grow and prosper and hopefully I'll have something to leave my kids."
