Carmon Funeral Homes To Be Honored With National Award

Seven (7) Connecticut funeral homes will be been recognized tomorrow with national awards for excellence from the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA). In addition, one of the funeral homes also will be honored with the association's first ever "Best of the Best" Pursuit of Excellence Award. The awards will be presented on Tuesday, October 17 at 4:30 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Penn. as part of NFDA's 125th Convention & Expo. All of the State's honorees are members of the Connecticut Funeral Directors Association.

Only 184 funeral homes in the U.S. will be honored with 2006 NFDA Pursuit of Excellence Awards for innovative community service programs, dynamic public relations efforts and professional integrity. The Connecticut winners are:

Bailey Funeral Home in Plainville, Conn.;
Carmon Community Funeral Homes, Inc. in Windsor, Conn.; D'Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel in East Hartford, Conn.; D'Esopo Funeral Chapel in Wethersfield, Conn.; Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home in Vernon, Conn.; Newington Memorial Funeral Home in Newington, Conn.; and Shaughnessey-Banks Funeral Home in Fairfield, Conn.

Carmon Community Funeral Homes also will be honored with the new NFDA "Best of the Best" Pursuit of Excellence Award making it one of just eight funeral homes nationwide and the only one in New England to be recognized. The award recognizes the Carmon family and staff for the creation of a special annual overnight trip to Washington, D.C. for veterans, enabling them to see the World War II Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery with their own eyes.

"The Pursuit of Excellence Award is the National Funeral Directors Association's premier standard for quality service and is a mark of distinction in funeral service," explains John Cascio, Executive Director of the Connecticut Funeral Directors Association (CFDA). "This program recognizes funeral homes that demonstrate superior standards, community involvement, and professional accomplishment."

To receive recognition in the program, a funeral home must meet strict quality service criteria in nine categories: education, compassionate service, technical skills, community and professional service, library or media resources, professional development, in-house staff training, and public and community relations.

NFDA is the leading funeral service association, serving 19,000 individual members who represent 10,000 funeral homes in the U.S. and other countries. From its headquarters in Brookfield, Wisc., and its Advocacy Office in Washington, D.C., NFDA provides advocacy, education, information, products, programs and services to help members enhance the quality of service to families. A complete listing of this year's award recipients can be viewed on NFDA's website at http://www.nfda.org/page.php?pID=783.

The Connecticut Funeral Directors Association is committed to the promotion and advocacy of high ethical standards in funeral service. This includes the development and presentation of ongoing professional training opportunities for practitioners and educational programs for association members and the public. The Wethersfield-based association was founded in 1889. For more information, call (860) 721-0234 or (800) 919-2332 or visit www.ctfda.org.
