Carmon Funeral Homes Honored

Family-owned Carmon Community Funeral Homes is the only New England funeral services firm and one of only nine in the entire U.S. to receive a "Best of the Best" Pursuit of Excellence Award from the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA).

The 60-year-old Windsor, Conn.-based Carmon Community Funeral Homes is run by brothers, John and Frank Carmon III. It was founded in 1946 by their father, Frank W. Carmon, Jr., and has since grown from one funeral home to nine, with a crematory.

This prestigious national award recognizes the Carmon family and staff for their creation of special overnight bus trips to Washington, D.C. for veterans of World War II and the Korean War. The funeral homes host these trips themselves to allow veterans to see with their own eyes the World War II Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. The moving experiences have included banquets where veterans share their personal stories and many special touches, including welcomes from Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd and Cong. John Larson. The trips are tributes to Frank W. Carmon, Jr., a decorated WW II hero who established Carmon Community Funeral Homes 60 years ago, and to his brave fellow soldiers.

In addition to the special top "Best of the Best" award, the company's Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home in Vernon, Conn. was honored with an NFDA Pursuit of Excellence Award for innovative community service programs, dynamic public relations efforts, and professional integrity. It is one of only 184 funeral homes in the U.S. to receive such an award.

"The Pursuit of Excellence Award is the National Funeral Directors Association's premier standard for quality service," explains NFDA Immediate Past President Robert J. Biggins, CFSP, CPC. "This program recognizes funeral homes that demonstrate superior standards, community involvement, and professional accomplishment. They are shining examples of community outreach and they set the standard for excellence for their peers."

The "Best of the Best" Pursuit of Excellence Awards were presented to Carmon Community Funeral Homes during the National Funeral Directors Association's 125th Convention & Expo at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Penn.

To receive recognition in the program, a funeral home must meet strict quality service criteria in nine categories: education, compassionate service, technical skills, community and professional service, library or media resources, professional development, in-house staff training, and public and community relations.

NFDA is the leading funeral service association, serving 19,000 individual members who represent 10,000 funeral homes in the U.S. and other countries. From its headquarters in Brookfield, Wisc., and its Advocacy Office in Washington, D.C., NFDA provides advocacy, education, information, products, programs and services to help members enhance the quality of service to families.
