What do a homeopathic physician, a 104-year-old matriarch, a hat-making factory owner, a talented early 19th century watercolorist, and one of Windsor's most dedicated historians of all time have in common? All lived in or worked at Windsor homes that will be open to the public on
Saturday, September 11th
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Windsor Historical Society's Doorways to our Patriotic Past house tour. Seven homes and a schoolhouse representing the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries will be featured.
"Costumed actors and actresses from the Windsor Jesters community theater group will welcome visitors at each of the homes, providing information about "their" respective houses and lifestyles, and bring history to life," explains Christine Ermenc, Executive Director of the Windsor Historical Society. "We have been lucky to have the participation of these talented actors as part of our last two house tours and many people have told us how special it made their experiences."
Visitors may tour the homes in any order they wish. The tour houses and featured individuals are:
101 Hayden Station Road: Bessie Foye, 104 years old will reminisce about her life experiences in the Hayden Station neighborhood. She saw the first model T automobile drive down their street and witnessed the moon landing.
40 Pleasant Street: William Shelton made hats from wool, sheep skins, muskrat, mink, and beaver in the early 19th century in a small mill at the foot of his property.
85 Preston Street: Richard Brainard served in World War II, was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart. Learn about his experiences growing up in Windsor in the 1920's and 1930's.
380 Broad Street: Meet Daniel Howard, historian, author, and Windsor School Superintendent. Largely self-educated until college, Howard obtained a Master's Degree from brown University in 1898. He was one of the organizers of the town's 300th anniversary in 1933.
390 Broad Street: Fannie Loomis Bissell was a self-taught artist who lived in the early 19th century in the home her ancestors had built in the 17th century. She created exquisite floral watercolor drawings now in the Windsor Historical Society's library, possibly because she never had children to raise.
1174 Windsor Avenue: Harriet Loomis will describe how Windsor citizens during the Revolutionary War dealt with shortages as provisions they grew and made were shipped off to the Revolutionary armies.
1194 Windsor Avenue: Erastus Case, a homeopathic physician, kept an office in Hartford and commuted to work by trolley. One day, while descending from the trolley, he was hit by a touring car. Not surprisingly, he considered the advent of automobiles a mixed blessing.
1195 Windsor Avenue (Stony Hill School, open 11 a.m.-4 p.m.): Cora Alford will tell you what it was like to teach in this one-room schoolhouse. Of the 38 pupils attending school during her time, only 62% attended regularly because they were needed by their families for agricultural tasks.
The September 11th house tour is the Society's major fundraiser, supporting public programs for schoolchildren and adults, and the operation of our historic houses, research library, exhibition
galleries, and family learning center. Only 700 tickets will be sold; these are priced at $20 in advance
of the tour, and $25 the day of the tour. Tickets and program books describing the homes and including maps and parking directions are now available at:
Ashley's Distinctive Jewelry and Gifts, 555 Day Hill Road, Windsor;
The Beanery Bistro, 55 Palisado Avenue, Windsor;
Bill Selig Jewelers, 161 Broad Street, Windsor;
Windsor Historical Society; 96 Palisado Avenue, Windsor.
You may also send a check (made out to Windsor Historical Society) to 96 Palisado Avenue and we will be happy to mail your tickets to you for an additional $2 postage and handling fee. Or order your tickets online by going to http://windsorhistoricalsociety.org (mailing charge applies.)
