On Saturday, March 13 come see

'A Different Time, A Different Place' Artists' talk with artists Stanwyck Cromwell and Cora Marshall.

Where: Windsor Art Center at the Freight House, 40 Mechanic St. (corner of Central & Mechanic Streets; behind CVS, off Rte. 159 in downtown Windsor)

Artists' talk at Windsor Art Center

Please come and hear Connecticut artists Stanwyck Cromwell, a native of Guyana, and Cora Marshall of the United States discuss the ways their lives, histories, and shared African heritage influence their work. Their work is displayed in the exhibition A Different Time, A Different Place. You will see that they reveal their connecting and diverging perspectives in distinctly different ways. Join the discussion with your own questions and observations.

Mr. Cromwell pays tribute to his Caribbean/African roots and juxtaposes past and present in vibrant colors, symbols and metaphors such as black-eyed peas. He uses multiple overlays to create depth and imaginary mindscapes in works that are figurative, abstract, and surrealistic.

Dr. Marshall's moving mixed-media portraits of enslaved people were inspired by actual runaway and to-be-sold advertisements in 18th and 19th century newspapers. She challenges us to reflect on the importance of remembering our ancestors and what it means to be free.

During this dialogue, we can explore, too, the ways our own lives diverge and connect to theirs through time and place.

About the artists:

Stanwyck Cromwell, the son of artists, was born in Georgetown, Guyana. A graphic artist in Guyana, he came to the United States in 1970 and earned a B.A. in Applied Arts from Charter Oak State College and a M.F.A. in painting from the University of Hartford. He has served many times as artist in residence, and his work has been in numerous solo and group exhibitions in southern New England and New York.

Cora Marshall was born in Washington, DC. She earned a B.F.A. from Howard University, an M.S. in Education from Bank Street College of Education with Parsons School of Design, and a Ph. D. from NYU. An artist, educator, and scholar, she is chairperson of the Art Department at Central Connecticut State University where she teaches. She has exhibited in Ghana, Pennsylvania, New York, and New England. She researches and speaks on contemporary African American artists, especially women.
