The Whimsical Sculpture of Don Porcaro at the Mercy Gallery
There will be an opening reception for artist Don Porcaro on
Tuesday, April 21
at 6:45-8:45 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
"Avatar," an exhibition of the whimsical possibilities embodied in ideas of animation and contemporary cultures by Don Porcaro will be on display in the Sue and Eugene Mercy Jr. Gallery, located in the Richmond Art Center on the campus of The Loomis Chaffee School. The exhibition will run from April 21 - June 15, 2009.
"Whimsy and function are great partners. I'm interested in sculpture that sits on that edge of functionality, only to be disarmed by all the ways in which one could almost put such an object to use," stated artist Don Porcaro following a recent exhibition. Porcaro's exhibition called
"Avatar" features sculptures that have bodies, legs, posture and personality, and are highly poly-chromed with synthetic color, suspending easy assumptions about time and origin, function and definition. They are frozen in animation, either laden with the memory of recent activity or pregnant with possibilities of the yet unknown. They engage in the kind of interaction with the physical world that we understand as human beings.
Their dynamism is related to the everyday things that we handle, like tools and toys, but their enigma comes from their refusal to be wholly defined.
New York-based sculptor Porcaro graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson
University and received his MFA from Columbia University. He is currently the Chair of the Fine Arts Department at New York City's Parsons School of Design. He has held shows of his popular work at the Kouros Gallery in New York and solo shows in Atlanta, Kansas City and Los Angeles. Porcaro describes his work as "based on our ability to experience wonder, and to stand at the cusp of what I refer to as the monster and the child, something purely fictional and innocent that informs our youthful imagination."
