Freedom Trail Run
The Connecticut Freedom Trail recognizes the importance sites throughout the State that are associated with the heritage and movement towards freedom of African Americans. The following Windsor Freedom Trail events are being held for the community in September: Windsor Freedom Trail Run, Saturday, September 19, 2009, starting at 5:30a.m. at Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion church, 320 Hayden Station Road, Windsor. The Freedom Trail Run provides individuals an opportunity to pay tribute to those who fled from the South in search of freedom by way of the Underground Railroad. The run is approximately 3.9 miles. (A bus will follow the runners) It will begin at the Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church and will end at the Riverside cemetery on East Street in Windsor, a site where a number of African American soldiers from the Connecticut 29th and 31st colored regiments and other civil war units are buried. Participants will stop at the other Windsor Freedom Trail Sites including the Joseph Rainey House and the Nancy Toney grave site. Upon returning to the church, we will visit the historic Archer cemetery. A Freedom Trail T-Shirt will be given to all runners and a country style breakfast will be served at the Church for event participants after the run. To sign up for the run, call Alfred Narcisse at 860-688-2479.
"A Journey Through Time A Story of the Windsor Freedom Trail", Sunday, September 20, 2009, starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Windsor High School, 50 Sage Park Road, Windsor. Come join us for a theatrical presentation of the experiences of historical characters associated with the Windsor Freedom Trail, including a solo skit by Kevin Johnson of the Connecticut State Library in commemoration of the Connecticut 29th Colored Regiment Civil War soldier, William Webb, a native of Hartford. These events are free of charge and open to the public. All are welcome to participate. For questions, contact Alfred Narcisse at 860-688-2479.
These events are free and open to the public. These Windsor Freedom Trail events are sponsored by the Windsor Freedom Trail Committee and supported by the Town of Windsor and the Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.
