The public is invited to join the amateur radio operators at the Vintage Radio and Communications Museum of Connecticut for an emergency-preparedness exercise that will take place on
Saturday, June 27
from noon until 5:00 p.m. and the public is invited to participate.
Over the past year, the news has been full of reports of ham radio operators providing critical communications during unexpected emergencies such as tornadoes, winter storms, wildfires and hurricanes. The annual Field Day event is designed to sharpen skills under such situations. The hams slogan, When All Else Fails, Ham Radio Works, is more than just words to the hams as they prove they can send messages in many forms without the use of phone systems, Internet or any other infrastructure that can be compromised in a crisis.
The public is invited to watch operators at the controls of the ham station at The Vintage Radio and Communications Museum in Windsor. They can listen as operators contact and exchange information with other hams around the country and they will be able to take the microphone and make a contact, under the guidance of a licensed operator. Admission for the ham event is free. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
The Vintage Radio and Communications Museum of Connecticut is located at 115 Pierson Lane in Windsor. It is dedicated to the preservation of old time communications equipment and to educating the public. The museum displays radios, televisions, motion picture and telephone equipment, as well as vintage advertising and memorabilia. Audio, video and paper libraries, along with an extensive collection of schematics, are also available for research. For more information visit www.vrcmct.org.
