"Paper Clips" Movie
A Greater Hartford synagogue invites the public to a poignant film about how a school's amazing effort to collect 6 million paper clips helped the students to understand the dramatic impact of the Holocaust.

On Saturday, September 4 at 7:30 p.m., Congregation Beth Ahm will present the award-winning "Paper Clips". The free movie at the synagogue on 362 Palisado Avenue (Route 159) in Windsor, Conn. will be part of a special Selichot evening that will include religious service and desserts.

"On the observance of Selichot, which takes place days before Rosh Hashanah*, Jews begin the process of self examination and reflection that continues through the High Holy Days," explains Rabbi Alan Lefkowitz of Congregation Beth Ahm, one of the only synagogues in Connecticut that offers free High Holy Days tickets to Jews who are not affiliated with any other congregation. "This film offers us the opportunity to discover how the amazing ways that people of all ages can learn about others who are very different and share this knowledge with their community." The beautiful and haunting Selichot Services will follow the discussion.

"Paper Clips" is an award-winning documentary that tells the story of a powerful middle school project in rural Tennessee that taught children about the atrocities of the Holocaust. Struggling to grasp the concept of
6 million Holocaust victims, the students at Whitwell Middle School decided to collect 6 million paper clips to better understand the extent of this crime against humanity. Through the school project, the children raised as Protestants in a poor southern town were exposed to the harsh reality of the world and they dealt with it with tolerance and understanding. The 2004 film details how the students met Holocaust survivors from around the world and how the experience transformed them and their community. "Paper Clips" won multiple awards from the Rome International Film Festival, USA, the Jackson Hole Film Festival, and the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

There is no charge for the Selichot film and evening and all are invited to attend. To reserve a seat and get more information, call Rabbi Alan Lefkowitz at Congregation Beth Ahm at (860) 688-9989.

This year, the 59-year-old Congregation Beth Ahm continues its tradition of welcoming Jews who do not belong to another synagogue to come worship with them at no charge for the High Holy Days. The Jewish High Holy Days begin on Wednesday evening, September 8 and continue through Yom Kippur which ends at sunset on Saturday, September 18.

Congregation Beth Ahm is one of only a few synagogues in Connecticut to offer tickets to non-members at no charge [Most synagogues don't even permit non-members to attend and, if they do, charge them for admission]. People MUST CALL AHEAD for tickets at (860) 242-6542.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services will be led by the synagogue's Rabbi Alan Lefkowitz. Much of the services will be in English and members of the congregation and the community will participate.
"We want people to be welcome and comfortable at our synagogue, and encourage members of the Greater Hartford Jewish community searching for spiritual fulfillment to discover our family-like congregation, and learn about the High Holy Day themes of emotional and spiritual renewal," adds Rabbi Lefkowitz. "Our practice of providing free High Holy Days tickets to members and extending the invitation to the community has been a long-standing tradition in our congregation."

Congregation Beth Ahm welcomes individuals and families from throughout Greater Hartford, including interfaith families. Most of its members live in Windsor, Suffield, Windsor Locks, Bloomfield, West Hartford, Enfield, the Farmington Valley, Granby, East Granby, and South Windsor. Congregation Beth Ahm was created by 16 families in 1951 and initially was known as The Jewish Community of Greater Windsor. In September 1960, it opened it doors in a newly built synagogue on 362 Palisado Avenue. The synagogue's religious school's small classroom learning begins at age 4 and continues through adulthood.

For High Holy Days tickets at Congregation Beth Ahm, people should call in advance to (860) 242-6542. For information about the Selichot evening and other programs and services, call Congregation Beth Ahm at (860) 688-9989 or visit www.congregationbethahm.org.
