'Death & Rapture
Poetry on The Line' at the Windsor Art Center

The second in a series of four Poetry on the Line events will take place on Sunday, November 15th at 2 PM followed by tea at 3. The reading will feature poets Norah Pollard reading from her new book, 'Death & Rapture in the Animal Kingdom', hot off the press, and Steve Foley reading from 'A Place at the Table' (2007). A musical interlude featuring Minta White on flute and Michael Linert on cello will accompany the reading.

The poems in 'Death & Rapture in the Animal Kingdom' display the wild joy and savage despair that mark Norah Pollard's earlier books. Reviewers have been thrilled by the ride it has given them. Wally Lamb has written, 'Before reading the manuscript of Norah Pollard's new book, I planned to make three stacks: the poems I loved, the ones I liked, and the ones I wasn't crazy about. An hour later, the 'wasn't crazy about' pile was non-existent, the 'liked' pile had three poems, and the 'loved' pile was the rest of the book. Pollard's poetry is simultaneously accessible and exceptional, her observations about life, love, and the natural world both disarming and alarming'.

Pollard is a beautiful storyteller, eloquent and observant, and above all-best of all-she does't flinch from the truths of her life. She received the Academy of American Poets Prize from the University of Bridgeport, and for several years edited The Connecticut River Review. Pollard's two earlier poetry collections, Leaning In and Report from the Banana Hospital appeared in 2003 and 2005. She has had a life-long passion for the visual arts, which she has put to good use as an editor-designer and illustrator.

'A Place at the Table' is Steve Foley's second volume of poetry. Of this collection, Hugh Ogden has said this: 'The beauty of Steve Foley's poetry is that he gives us a threshold and lets us stand there and watch with nothing except the depth and resonance of the moment... His poetry brings us to a deep emotional awareness and a tenderness of feeling, but it does so with intelligence that places fatherhood, motherhood and childhood in the context of American society. At the end of a Steve Foley poem, we stand with him because of his warmth, his knowledge and his skill with words, more aware of the preciousness of life and what it means to be sensitively aware.'

Steve Foley's poetry has appeared in publications such as Northeast Magazine, Friends' Journal and The Portland Review. His chapbook, 'With the Hollow of Your Hand', was published by Andrew Mountain Press in 1999. During the past thirty years he has given many poetry readings at venues such as the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. Named 1980 Poet of the Year by the New England Association of Teachers of English, Foley taught English and directed dramatic productions in Connecticut public high schools for more than three decades. Before retiring in 2008, he chaired the English Department of the High School and Middle School in South Windsor.
