Recycled Rhythms Workshop

Families, children, elders, anyone who loves rhythm and recycling: join artist/educator/musician Scott Kessel on Saturday, April 24 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a Recycled Rhythms workshop at Windsor Historical Society and discover a world of instruments available in your recycling bin. Spend a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon starting with a lively demonstration of Kessel's own recycled instruments. These include a Danish butter cookie tin banjo strung with fishing line (the "canjo"), and a suitcase bass drum. Next, participants have the option of making wooden harmonicas and shakers, then assembling what Kessel calls a "Drumship Enterprise" (cans, jugs, yoghurt cups, spring water bottles taped together and attached to the waist with a belt of cloth or tape, played with unsharpened pencils.)

Once everyone has an instrument built, participants will learn rhythms, songs and about cultures from around the world. Scott teaches in a call-and-response style and often uses verbal patterns to help his audiences pick up the rhythms quickly. The culmination of the afternoon will be a grand finale performance/parade with other audience members -- an unforgettable way to experience the joys of making music together. If weather permits, the final performance part of the program will take place outdoors. Cost for the program is $6 adults, $5 seniors and students, $4 WHS members. So we can plan to have enough recycled supplies on hand, reservations are recommended before April 23.

Since this is a recycling program, here's what we'll need:
CANS of all sizes with sharp edges smoothed down
SPRING WATER BOTTLES (small to medium)
PLASTIC CONTAINERS WITH OR WITHOUT LIDS, from film canisters and yoghurt cups to old Tupperware and buckets
CARDBOARD BOXES, under a foot long, corrugated cardboard. Cereal boxes are too flimsy.
ELECTRICAL TAPE in assorted colors (black, red, green). Also MASKING TAPE.
CLEAR MAILING TAPE ideally with tape cutter built into the dispenser
3-INCH WIDE STRIPS OF RIBBON OR CLOTH IN 5 FOOT LONG LENGTHS.
RUBBER BANDS (1/4 inch wide flat kind)
Workshop participants: please bring as many supplies as you can from this list. All supplies must be clean. Even if you won't be attending the workshop, please help by dropping off supplies at the Society before the program. This program is supported by the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts, the George A. and Grace L. Long Foundation, and the Greater Hartford Arts Council.
