Richard Ziemann Installation To Open At The Mercy Gallery
Richard Claude Ziemann has been referred to as "the foremost landscape etcher-engraver in America." The works of the Connecticut-based master artist will be featured at the Sue and Eugene Mercy Jr. Gallery, beginning February 16. The gallery is located in the Richmond Art Center on the campus of The Loomis Chaffee School. The exhibition will run through April 15.
Ziemann's intricate etchings are studies of fields of grass, the hidden interiors of trees and the forest floor. "Nature is an inexhaustible visual source for my work," stated Ziemann. "It is a combination of direct intuitive response in the landscape with later formal adjustments and refinements in the studio." He works directly on large etching plates in the landscape environment while experiencing the play of light and daily atmospheric changes.
Referred to as the "poet of landscape etching," Ziemann's work, which comprises many New England scenes, has been shown in America's major museums, including the Smithsonian Institution, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art among many others. He has also been featured in one-man exhibitions throughout the New York and New England area.
Ziemann received both his BFA and his MBA from Yale University and he has taught at Yale, Lehman College, and Hunter College, where he is Professor Emeritus. He is the recipient of grants from the Fulbright Program, the Tiffany Foundation, and the National Institute of Art and Letters.
There will be an opening reception on Tuesday, February 16 from 6:45 8:45 p.m. The public is invited to attend the opening reception and view the exhibitions during regular gallery hours. The Sue and Eugene Mercy, Jr. Gallery is located in the Richmond Art Center on the campus of The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:30 9 p.m. and Sunday afternoon from 1 4 p.m. There is no admission charge. Please note that the gallery is closed during school vacations. For additional information, call the Richmond Art Center Information Line, 860-687-6030 or visit www.mercygallery.org.
