Songs of the 1940s
Join us at Wilson Branch Library for a tuneful tour through this decade. On Saturday, November 6, we'll talk about trends in popular music, top performers and the hits they made famous, and listen to recordings of some of these works.
Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman, the Andrews Sisters, Big Bands, patriotic songs of World War II-these were among the highlights that made the 1940s a particularly memorable era in American music. Billboard magazine began its Music Popularity Chart, with Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" coming in at number one for 12 weeks in a row. Films like "Pinocchio" and "Going My Way" produced hit songs like "When You Wish Upon a Star" and "Swingin' on Star." Broadway musicals such as "Oklahoma," "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Finian's Rainbow" brought their own popular tunes. Wartime classics included "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B" and "Rosie the Riveter." Please call (860) 247-8960 to sign up.
