Howard Fishman and his Band

"At a time when performers in virtually every genre are trying to stretch their stylistic boundaries, Fishman refuses to acknowledge that boundaries exist."
The Los Angeles Times

BROOKLYN, NY: Critically-acclaimed singer, guitarist, composer and bandleader Howard Fishman and his band will make their SUMMERWIND debut on July 15, 2012.

A West Hartford native, Howard Fishman spent his musically formative years playing on the streets of New Orleans before moving to Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the late 90's where he was an early pioneer of the Brooklyn music scene. While playing on subway platforms for spare change with his quartet, Fishman had what he describes as a "Hollywood moment" (he and his band were discovered by music insiders) landing him a two-week engagement at the Algonquin Oak Room, one of NYC's toniest concert venues.

Fishman's first success came as an interpreter of the American Songbook, specifically pre-war jazz, pop, blues and country music. Reviewing his show for The New York Times, critic Stephen Holden wrote that "Rather than studiously copying the sounds of the past, the group recombines familiar elements to create its own brand of classicism."

Since then, Fishman has evolved to become a critically-acclaimed composer in his own right, and has headlined in major venues both here and abroad, including the Lincoln Center American Songbook series, The Steppenwolf Theatre, The Pasadena Playhouse, Joe's Pub, NJPAC, and Le Petit Journal in Paris. He maintains a full-time touring schedule and has garnered a devoted following worldwide. His tenth and most recent CD, Moon Country, is a collection of Hoagy Carmichael standards. The All Music Guide calls him as "an important force in the world of creative music."

Dubbed "an unsettling combination of Buster Keaton and Lou Reed" (Edge NY), Fishman's good- natured, insightful concerts "feel like a reunion it can't be helped" (11211 Magazine). He brings a punk-like edge to an encyclopedic familiarity with diverse musical forms to create "an irresistible synthesis" (Backstage) that is "something entirely new" (Downbeat). Fishman's concerts feature him singing and playing an extensive catalogue of music, in a highly improvisational format sometimes explosive, sometimes intimate, often in the course of a single song.

Ever-evolving and increasingly difficult to pin down, Fishman filters a deep passion for New Orleans jazz, Brooklyn soul, open-hearted country, blues, gospel and the American Songbook through a completely original, experimental aesthetic, to create a sound entirely his own. The New York Times has written that Howard Fishman's music "transcends time and idiom."

Sarah Armstrong has delighted audiences on the operatic, musical theater and concert stages for 25 years. She has sung internationally in Italy, England, Wales and Africa. Nationally, her professional experience began in 1992 when she joined the Lyric Opera of Chicago as a member of the chorus, singing with them for five seasons before embarking on her solo career. She performed with such companies as: The Metropolitan Opera, The Bronx Opera, The New York American Chamber Opera, Sarasota Opera, Connecticut Opera and at the Goodspeed Opera House, where she had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be directed by Julie Andrews! Sarah's love for music is shared by her husband Dylan, also a professional musician. She and Dylan are both blessed to be able to work with Steve Mitchell, her musical partner this evening, at Asylum Hill Congregational Church.

The Hartford Pops Band Salute to America

The Hartford Pops Band, originally The Insurance City Band has been around since the 1940's. The ensemble comprised of many prominent area professional musicians performed weekly concerts at the Rose Garden of Elizabeth Park on the West Hartford/Hartford Town Line. After years of performing the group lost its sources of funding due to economic hard times.

In the 80's, President of the Musicians Union Local 400, Bill Steinberg started the group going again, this time under the name, The Hartford Pops Band. The band has been going strong ever since and performing throughout the summer months in the greater Hartford area. The ensembles current conductor, Gary Partridge, leads the group of superior performers some of which are area educators, members of Hartford, New Haven, New Britain Symphonies as well
as area free-lance musicians. Mr. Partridges' creative programming and ability to interact with audiences have built a large base of regular concert goers.

For the July 1 Concert, "Pops Salutes America", we will feature the usual Fourth of July favorites, including America the Beautiful, God Bless the USA, Overture 1812, and Stars and Stripes Forever. The featured soloist will be Walter Mamlok, clarinet, playing the Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto. It is jazz, and Walter throws in a little Klezmer just for taste. The crowd will love it!
