Event:The Ballad of Mack Street
Date:May 4th, 2008
Time:2:00 PM
On Sunday, May 4th, Connecticut residents will have a rare opportunity to discover an important chapter of Windsor's history, straight from the man whose family spent seven generations in the town's once-thriving brick-making industry.

Dr. Daniel Mack will present his final public commentary about three paintings that he created to illustrate the history of the Mack Brickyard and his life growing up in Windsor. His presentation, entitled The Ballad of Mack Street , will be held on Sunday, May 4 at 2 p.m. in the L.P. Wilson Community Center Auditorium at 599 Matianuck Avenue in Windsor, Conn. The program is hosted by Windsor AARP #1101 and proceeds will benefit the Windsor Senior Center, which is located in the same building.

Dr. Mack calls this event his last hurrah so we encourage everyone to come and enjoy this special experience, explains Mary Drost, who is co-chairing the event with Bernie Simmons, Vice President of Windsor AARP #1101. He will introduce the audience to his colorful paintings and share humorous recollections about growing up in the 1920's and '30s with eight brothers and sisters on Mack Street in his ]family's brick-making business. Enlarged slide images will focus on many special details in the paintings and he will provide interesting comments about each one.

The lifelong resident of Windsor and 1939 graduate of John Fitch High School now Windsor High School is a retired obstetrician/gynecologist who delivered more than 9,000 babies during his career.

Dr. Mack's family ran the Mack brickyard for seven generations. Its founder was Andrew Mack, a Hessian soldier born in 1751 who was conscripted into the British Army and captured at the Battle of Bennington during the American Revolution. Sent to Newgate Prison, he eventually was released, and entered the Patriot Army in 1779. He settled in Windsor on what was to become Mack Street and established the company in the early 1800s. Throughout the years, all of the Mack boys, including Dan and his brother Ed, worked in the brickyard from the time they were 11 or 12 years old.

During intermission, piano music will be provided by Dr. Matthew Saidel, a friend of Dr. Mack's and a fellow Ob/Gyn. Refreshments will be provided following the presentation.

Free parking will be available on-site at L.P. Wilson Center. There also will be shuttle bus transportation from the parking lot of St. Gertrude Church, located across the street.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students and can be purchased at the door or in advance. For more information or to purchase a ticket, call Mary Drost at (860) 688-3823, Bernie Simmons at (860) 688-6119, or George Metzler at (860) 688-2515.
