Event:The Loomis Chaffee Concert Choir and Chamber Singers
Date:May 9th, 2010.
Time:3:00 PM
The Loomis Chaffee Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, under the direction of Susan Barone Chrzanowski, will present a concert Sunday, May 9, at 3 p.m. in the Performance Hall of the Hubbard Music Center on the school campus.

The 75 members of the choir will perform Mendelssohn's chorus "How Lovely are the Messengers," from the oratorio St. Paul; the spiritual "Soon Ah Will Be Done," arranged by William Dawson; "Amparito," a Cuban song accompanied by marimba duet, played by student Nina Sayles '13 and percussion teacher Bill Solomon; and "Not While I'm Around," from Stephen Sondheim's musical Sweeney Todd. Additionally, they will sing an arrangement of a Russian Folk Song, "Along the River," in the original Russian. The choir members have been coached in Russian pronunciation by member Erica Cunningham '10, who speaks Russian.

The sopranos and altos of the Concert Choir will perform "Gloria" by the early Renaissance composer, Guillaume Dufay, accompanied by guests Fred Bagnall and Leroy Loomer playing sackbuts. (The sackbut is a forerunner of the modern trombone.) The tenors and basses of the choir will perform Grieg's "Brothers, Sing On," conducted by choral accompanist and assistant James Rugen '70. He will also conduct the entire choir in a performance of "Set Me As a Seal" by Ren Clausen.

The 26 members of the Chamber Singers will perform the Elizabethan madrigal "Lady, Your Eye My Love Enforced," by Thomas Weelkes; the Dawson arrangement of the spiritual "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel"; the traditional American hymn "Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal," arranged by Alice Parker; the spiritual "I Want Jesus to Walk with Me," arranged by Ken Berg; and a moving setting by Paul A. Aitken of the John McCrae 1915 World War I poem "Flanders Fields." This piece was the 1999 American Choral Directors Association Raymond W. Brock Student Composition Award winner.

The concert is free and open to the public.
