There's an Amazing New Program coming to Raw Food Central
Saturday, June 30, 2012
from 9:30 am to 2 pm
Tom Sullivan, M.A.L.D., is a landscape designer and native bee habitat educator.
He founded his landscape design company Pollinators Welcome (.com) to make his unique constellation of skills and values available to homeowners and businesses who want to join his "yard by-yard" movement for region-wide native bee habitat conservation and expansion.
Tom's lifelong love of bees and honey, and the failure of his only bee hive, brought him to around to understanding the key role native bees play with all of the plants in our world, especially our food crops. He is devoted to helping solve the pollination crisis our planet is facing.
Since graduating from the Conway School of Landscape Design he has been invited to speak at the USFW Discovery Center; the Natural & Organic Farmers Association (NOFA) Conference; the Springfield Science Museum; and The Hitchcock Center for the Environment. In 2011, Tom designed and supervised the installation of the pollinator habitat nursery in Hadley, MA, at That's A Plenty Farm, one of the only two farms that were funded by the NRCS in Massachusetts last year for pollinator habitat installation.
Tom will be here at Raw Food Central on June 30 for a timely and extremely interesting presentation. His presentation will include a two hour slide and conversation session, Hands on experience getting to know some of the native bees up close and personal, a question and answer session and a walking presentation around the neighborhood where he will illustrate ideas for yard plantings and layout that support and sustain the native bees in our area.
In the morning at 9:30 am we will start with a complimentary fruit or green smoothie to get you juiced up and ready for this active, fun, dynamic and educational presentation.
A Delicious Raw Lunch is also included in this presentation package so that you can spend your time with Tom in total ease and in an enhanced learning state of mind and environment.
Many people are aware of honey bee colony collapse disorder but most are not very tuned into the variety of native bees who also pollinate approximately one third of our food crops. There are 400 native bee species in New England alone, 90% of which lay their eggs, pupate and overwinter in the ground.
Since the native bees do so much and live so close to us, in the ground and under rocks or in woody materials, we might think proactively about how to manage our landscapes with them in mind.
Tom's focus is that we can help these immensely important insects by first creating pollinator-positive flower garden and farm edge environments. Connecting your pollinator-friendly habitats with those of our neighbors is what our Yard-by-Yard Campaign is all about.
And you'll learn much more on Saturday.
Native bees feed their offspring nectar and pollen. By judicious planting we can make a floral paradise for bees and all our insect friends. We can also provide areas for native bees to raise their young by choosing prime sites or creating the conditions for them to lay their eggs and overwinter.
Tom will also discuss and focus on how we can create ecologically-oriented edible landscapes to eat from throughout our growing season. Combining food production with pollinator habitat is critical for our crop pollination, food security and the survival of so many insects that are on the lower levels of the food chain.
There is limited seating for this power packed special session with Tom
Reserve your spot now for this great presentation and you'll enjoy the extra summer benefit of knowing that you are doing something really special for your self in what you see and enjoy in your yard and your food.
