Windsor Birthday Lecture on September 28th: The Story behind Windsor's 1633 Trading Post.
What is the back story behind the September 26, 1633 founding of Windsor? Every Windsor resident and anyone interested in early Connecticut history should know. Join us at 7:00 PM on
Tuesday, September 28th
at Windsor Historical Society for a trip through time to Windsor's founding, as Al Boehm unveils some of the answers. Boehm, an engineer by profession and an illustrator by avocation, uses maps and original drawings to follow Edward Winslow, Plymouth's diplomat and trading leader, as he explores and promotes expanding the Plymouth Colony's trade territory into the Connecticut River valley in the 1630's.
Why settle in Windsor? Boehm's research, based on the journals of William Bradford and John Winthrop reveals that Windsor's founding took place against a backdrop of international intrigue as the English, Dutch, French, and various Native Peoples vied for control of the lucrative fur trade in what is now New England. An amazing and unpredictable set of events during the 1630's are examined as Windsor is first settled as a trading post and rapidly grows into a town within a colony. Boehm's research and art reveals a world where a cow was worth more than an acre of land and a landscape based on Algonquian land management practices looked quite different from the European practices that define our town landscape today. To honor Windsor's founding, birthday cake will be served. The cost for this program is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and $4 for WHS members.
The Windsor Historical Society, founded in 1921, invites visitors to explore the people, places, and events that have shaped Windsor for over 370 years. The Society's museum includes changing and permanent exhibition galleries; a hands-on history learning center for families; a research library and manuscript collection housing Windsor photographs, documents, ephemera, and genealogical materials, a museum shop and two historic houses open to the public--the 1758 John and Sarah Strong House and the 1767 Dr. Hezekiah Chaffee House.
The Windsor Historical Society is located at 96 Palisado Avenue (Route 159) and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. General admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students and free to children under 12 and WHS members. Call (860) 688-3813 or visit us on the web at www.windsorhistoricalsociety.org for directions to the Society and more information about programs.
